Clear water, marine life and a sea cave: how a group from the Netherlands spent a private snorkeling tour in Papagayo Bay, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Miller Time Tours recently welcomed a group from the Netherlands for a private snorkeling tour in Papagayo Bay, Guanacaste. It was a day of clear water, marine life, a sea cave and some of the best coastal views in Costa Rica, and a great chance to share the natural treasures of the Pacific coast with visitors from the other side of the world.

Why Papagayo Bay is great for snorkeling

The Gulf of Papagayo, in the northwest of Costa Rica, is full of small bays, rocky points and beaches you can only reach by boat. On calm days the water is clear and sheltered, which makes it one of the best places for snorkeling in Guanacaste, for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.

Along the rocky points you'll usually see colorful reef fish and starfish. Sea turtles are spotted regularly in the calmer bays, and rays and small reef sharks show up now and then further from shore.

Our day with the group from the Netherlands

The day started with a boat ride along the coastline from Playa Hermosa, with the cliffs and islands of Papagayo Bay on one side and the open Pacific on the other. Captain Steven picked the bays where the water was calmest and clearest that day, then slowed the boat down so the group could spend real time in the water.

Between snorkeling stops, our guests explored a sea cave along the rocks and stopped at a lookout above the bay for a group photo. Clear water, a cave to explore and big smiles all around: exactly how a day on the water in Costa Rica should feel.

Which snorkeling tour is right for you?

Every tour is private, so the plan follows your group's pace. Snorkel gear, life vests, drinks and fresh fruit are included.

Tips for snorkeling in Guanacaste

  • Not a strong swimmer? No problem: life vests and flotation are on board, and the crew stays close.
